Indonesia’s creative industry making waves as artists, musicians and developers shine globally

Jun 30, 2024 – More recently, on June 24, President Joko Widodo launched a new digital licensing service, which aims to cut through the red tape and bureaucratic complications of staging arts events in the country.

Widodo said some events required 13 different permits and recommendation letters, which he described as cumbersome and a deterrent to organising them.

“With the upcoming digitisation of permits, I hope it will not just be a web service but truly provide ease of management, certainty, reduce bureaucracy, and lead to lower costs while being more open and transparent,” he said.

While the contribution of the creative economy to Indonesia is getting higher in absolute terms, economists have pointed out that its relative contribution to the total economy has decreased.

Indonesia-based Permata Bank chief economist Josua Pardede told ST that the latest data showed the sector constituted 6.54 per cent of Indonesia’s overall economy in 2022, down from 7.02 per cent in 2021.

In order to advance the creative economy in Indonesia, Josua said the government needs to develop more high-value added creative products, such as software and gaming, architecture services, design services, music, and film.

These sectors, he explained, could also provide higher-paying jobs.

“The development of these sectors should also target the foreign market, not only the domestic, as it could also help Indonesia’s trade balance, especially from increasing Indonesia’s service export value,” added Josua.

Indonesia Successfully Initiates Creative Economy Resolution at the UN

Dec 20, 2023 – Another significant achievement has been recorded by Indonesia’s diplomacy at the United Nations multilateral forum. Indonesia has successfully initiated the adoption of a resolution entitled “Promoting Creative Economy for Sustainable Development” by consensus at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on December 19, 2023. This resolution is the first of its kind within the United Nations specifically addressing the creative economy (CE).

The resolution encourages UN member states and various related parties to provide greater support to the development of the creative economy sector, including through (i) strengthening data, (ii) improving research, talent development, education and training, (iii) increasing access to finance, health and social protection, (iv) utilising intellectual property, and (v) utilising digital technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), responsibly.

In addition, the Resolution mandates the UN to regularly discuss creative economy issues, increase capacity building support, facilitate discussions, conduct research, compile guidelines and publications on a regular basis.

For Indonesia, the Resolution continues Indonesia’s leadership role in mainstreaming international cooperation on creative economy, which has been realised through the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) initiative since 2018. Moreover, the Resolution will also be used by Indonesia to realise more capacity building cooperation that will be of real benefit to creative economy actors and various national stakeholders.
