Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands
Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, known for its picturesque canals, historic architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and liberal atmosphere. Here are some key aspects of the city:
Canal Ring: Amsterdam is famous for its concentric canal rings, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canals, built during the 17th century, are lined with tall, narrow houses that reflect Dutch Golden Age architecture. The three main canals – Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht – are iconic symbols of the city.
Cultural Heritage: The city has a rich cultural heritage, evident in its numerous museums and art galleries. The Rijksmuseum is home to an extensive collection of Dutch art, including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer. The Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings, and the Anne Frank House is a poignant reminder of the city’s history during World War II.
Liberal Atmosphere: Amsterdam is known for its progressive and liberal attitude, which is reflected in its policies on social issues such as drugs and the acceptance of diverse lifestyles. The city is famous for its historic tolerance and is a popular destination for those seeking a laid-back and open-minded environment.
Bicycling Culture: Amsterdam is a highly bike-friendly city, with an extensive network of cycling paths and a significant portion of the population using bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. Exploring the city by bike is a popular and efficient way to navigate the narrow streets and enjoy the sights.
Diverse Neighborhoods: Each neighborhood in Amsterdam has its own character and charm. Beyond the city center, neighborhoods like Jordaan, De Pijp, and Oud-West offer unique experiences, including trendy shops, markets, and a variety of dining options.
Coffee Shops: Amsterdam is known for its unique approach to cannabis regulation. While not legal, the possession and consumption of small quantities are tolerated, and the city has “coffee shops” where patrons can purchase and consume cannabis in a controlled environment.
Tolerance and Diversity: Amsterdam is a diverse and tolerant city, welcoming people from various backgrounds and cultures. The city’s cosmopolitan atmosphere is reflected in its population and the wide range of international cuisine, festivals, and events.
Festivals and Events: Throughout the year, Amsterdam hosts various festivals and events, celebrating everything from art and music to LGBTQ+ pride. The King’s Day celebration on April 27th is a particularly lively event, with the entire city turning orange to celebrate the Dutch monarchy.
Amsterdam’s unique blend of history, culture, and modernity makes it a popular destination for tourists and a fascinating place to explore. Whether cruising along the canals, visiting world-class museums, or simply strolling through its neighborhoods, Amsterdam offers a diverse and enriching experience.
Canon van Amsterdam
The Canon of Amsterdam summarizes the city’s history in fifty short chapters — or ‘windows’. This was compiled in 2008 by an independent committee led by professor of Dutch history Piet de Rooy. The Amsterdam population was given a vote in the final choice of windows. In the run-up to 750 years of Amsterdam, a new, diverse committee is reviewing the content together with the current Amsterdam population: the new Canon of Amsterdam will be published in 2025.
